For the second straight year, the SMU men's golf team has claimed the team title and Colt Knost has earned medalist honors at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,035-yard Centennial Pinehurst Course No. 8. SMU shot a 592 for two rounds to top fellow Conference USA member UAB (596) by four strokes as Tuesday's final round was cancelled due to wet and unplayable conditions.
Knost, last season's Pinehurst medalist, clinched first place individually with an even-par 72 on Monday. He edged UNCG's Will Shambley by one stroke, 143 to 144. Brandon DeStefano also had a great second 18, as the 2006 John Burns Invitational medalist shot 1-over 73 to take third place at 145. Will Dodson (T34-152) and Scott Sikes (T53-155) both shot 78 on Monday, while Wes Homan's 83 left him back in 69th at 157.
The win is SMU's third of the season, having also taken home team crowns from the University Club Intercollegiate and the John Burns Invitational.
Last season, Knost drained a 30-foot putt on No. 18 to clinch medalist honors and the team title for the Mustang men's golf team. Knost's putt highlighted a final-round 69 as the Pilot Point, Texas, native edged Indiana's Jeff Overton by one stroke, 210 to 211, and his six-under-par effort led the Mustangs to a one-stroke team win over Xavier, 875 to 876.
