Sorenstam Faces Stiff Test

RSS

Ladies Professional Golf AssociationWorld No. 1 Annika Sorenstam returns from a fun skins game against the boys in Singapore to face a truly deep field of determined girls at the season-ending The ADT Championship at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Now in its eighth year, the LPGA Tour Championship extends invites to the top 30 money winners from the 2003 season.

Coming into the event, Sorenstam is still queen of the LPGA Tour, but an influx of very talented young players this year seem poised to soon challenge Annika for the throne.

Of course, Sorenstam, who will be going for her seventh LPGA Tour victory of the season, will still have to deal with her current rivals such as Se Ri Pak, Karrie Webb, Laura Davis and Juli Inkster, who between them have amassed 21 major titles.

But it's a new generation of stars that is becoming the buzz on tour. Grace Park, Hee-Won Han, Lorena Ochoa, Gloria Park, Suzann Pettersen and Mi-Hyun Kim are all a part of a crop of players that quite possibly makes the LPGA Tour as deep as it has ever been.

This only makes what Sorenstam has accomplished all the more impressive.

Although she has the Player of the Year award already locked up on the strength of her six wins and two majors, Sorenstam will undoubtedly be looking to wrap up the year on a high note - and that means once again beating the best the tour has to offer.

The purse for this week's event is $1,000,000, with $215,000 going to the winner.

Previous winners of the tournament include both Sorenstam and Webb twice, Pak, Davis and Dottie Pepper. Sorenstam is the defending champion.
