BIRMINGHAM, ALA - The Southern Golf Association, which stages the 100-year-old Southern Amateur Championship, has engaged golf writer and author Larry Guest as a consultant and media liaison. The move is one of several being unveiled over the next few weeks by the SGA designed to raise the visibility and allure of the venerable tournament.

A sports columnist for the Orlando Sentinel for 28 years until his recent retirement, Guest authored five books, the latest a best-selling profile of the late Payne Stewart. He has been published in all of the leading national golf magazines and has won numerous awards for his golf stories and columns.

Guest hopes to use his network of golf contacts to gain the Southern Amateur increased print and electronic media exposure. His first task will be to formulate and distribute a tournament policy change major announcement the SGA plans to release later this month.
