South African Open on Shaky Ground

Sunshine TourDespite pleas from Sunshine Tour executives, the future of the South African Open Championship remains in doubt due to the lack of a title sponsor.
The event, which is second in age only to the British Open, is scheduled for Jan. 10-13, but will not go ahead if a sponsor is not found.
Without a sponsor it wont go ahead, said Louis Martin, the Sunshine Tours Chief Executive. Well lose the European co-sanctioned status and golf in South Africa will be severely affected for years to come.
The problems began with the falling value of the rand, and were compounded when Mercedes-Benz decided not to renew their five-year contract with the event.
