Surfs Up In Virginia Beach

The Nationwide Tour heads to the beach this week after a week of inactivity for the fourth edition of the Virginia Beach Open at the TPC of Virginia Beach, Va.

This will be just the seventh event in the Nationwide's 30 tournament schedule and already four players have surpassed the $100,000 mark, led by Joe Ogilvie who has amassed $161,650.

Much of Ogilvie's earnings came from winning the tour's season-opening event in Australia, the Jacob's Creek Open, and also with a fine showing at last week's BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs, where he came in a tie for fourth.

Also teeing it up this week is Zach Johnson, who's second to Ogilvie on the money list though he has only competed in half as many events. He won the Rheem Classic three weeks ago and also had a strong third place finish at the Arkansas Classic the previous week. In fact, Johnson has finished no worse than fourth in his three starts, finishing in fourth at last week's BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs.

Played on one of the longest and toughest courses on the Nationwide Tour, The TPC of Virginia Beach, it plays to 7,432 yards and was the third-hardest course on the Tour in 2003, playing to stroke average of 73.266.

The Golf Channel will televise all four rounds live beginning Thursday at 1:30 PM.

The purse is $450,000 with $81,000 going to the winner.
