Thats The Tway It Is

Every time Bob Tway plays well he comes closer to breaking an eight-year winless drought on the PGA Tour. But every time he plays well he also has to try and explain why he hasnt won since the 1995 Heritage.

I wish I knew the answer to that because I would have done something different, Tway said following his second-round 68 that gave him the outright lead in the Ford Championship at Doral.

My big year was my second year on tour, maybe it was too early.

Tway won four times in his sophomore season, in 1986, including the PGA Championship, when he hit one of the most memorable bunker shots in golf history ' a hole-out on the 72nd hole at Inverness to win by two over perennial hard-luck loser Greg Norman.

He next won the 1989 Memorial Tournament, and followed that with a victory in the 1990 Las Vegas Invitational. Since then, though, he has but one win ' Hilton Head, 1995.

My career has been up and down, but the great thing is Im doing something that I really enjoy doing, said Tway, who admitted he unsuccessfully tinkered with his swing early in his career. I still think in my heart that I can win, so I keep plugging along.

He did just that Friday, making four birdies and no bogeys on Dorals Blue Course to get to 11-under-par 133. Hes one shot clear of 2000 champion Jim Furyk, who had a 66.

Overnight leader Rod Pampling had three birdies and an eagle in round two. But he also had four bogeys for a 1-under 71.

I hit four bad tee shots -- two on par-3s and two on par-4s. Its difficult when you dont hit fairways out here, said Pampling, who missed six fairways for the second straight day.

Pampling is tied with Carlos Franco (68) for third. Scott Hoch (70), who like Tway is making his 19th career start in this event, is alone in fifth place at 8-under.

The cut fell at 1-under-par 143. Eighty-six players made it to the weekend. Jack Nicklaus was not among them. The 63-year-old shot his second 73 to finish at 2-over.

Though he didnt make the cut, Nicklaus did tie Colin Montgomerie and David Toms, and beat son Gary (3-over), Rich Beem (4-over) and David Duval (10-over).
