Thorpe Goes Shopping for Repeat Victory

Jim Thorpe will try to defend his title for the second week in a row at the Kroger Senior Classic.
Thorpe finished tied for 20th in his first attempt at the Allianz Championship. Last year, the Kroger Classic preceded the Allianz.
The 53-year-old has had a successful season thus far, winning The Countrywide Tradition and earning five other top-5 finishes.
His victory at the Golf Center at Kings Island a year ago was his first of the season, and first of two-in-a-row. Though the event was weather-shortened to 36 holes, Thorpe finished the tournament in dramatic fashion.
First, he nailed a 3-wood to a foot for eagle on the final hole to force a playoff with Tom Jenkins. He then birdied the par-5 18th on the first extra hole for victory.
This is the 13th playing of the event. The TPC at Rivers Bend in Maineville, Ohio, outside of Cincinnati, will play host for the first time. Kings Island had been the tournament site since its inception in 1990.
Close calls are the norm, as only two of the 12 prior editions have been decided by more than two strokes.
