GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) -- Lee Trevino and Fuzzy Zoeller each won $90,000 Monday in the opening nine holes of the Par-3 Shootout, while defending champion Fred Couples picked up $60,000 and Phil Mickelson earned $10,000.

Each par-3 in the 18-hole skins event at Treetops Resort is worth $20,000, while the player closest to the pin on each hole collects another $10,000. Players do not collect a skin until they validate it with a victory or tie for the low score on the following hole. Any hole-in-one is worth $1 million.

The second nine holes will be Tuesday.

Trevino, the only player to ever get an ace in the five years of this made-for-TV event, was closest to the pin five times Monday. He won a $40,000 skin with a birdie on the 139-yard 8th hole and validated it with a par on the final hole, the 138-yard 9th.

'I'm as surprised as anyone here,' said Trevino, 63, who has not played competitive golf this summer. 'This was exciting for me. I had five closest to the hole, and that's winning for me, with the caliber of the guys I'm playing with.'

Trevino, who aced the 138-yard 7th hole here two years ago, was less than 2 feet from the pin on the 161-yard 2nd hole and hit the pin with his tee shot on No. 8.

'I almost talked it in there on 8, didn't I?' Trevino said.

Zoeller, 51, who finished tied for fourth in last week's U.S. Senior Open, won his $90,000 on the 141-yard 4th when he hit the ball within 7 feet and was the only player with a birdie. He validated the win with a par on the next hole.

'This is fun and I have three great guys to play golf with,' Zoeller said.

Couples, 43, who won $410,000 here last year, won a $40,000 skin Monday with a birdie on the 166-yard 6th. He validated it on the following hole when he hit his tee shot within 2 feet.

Mickelson, third on the latest points list for the 2004 U.S. Ryder Cup team, won all of his money by being closest to pin on one hole.
