Els, a wire-to-wire winner in 1996 and 1997, said he hurt himself while working out Tuesday. He skipped Wednesdays pro-am.
I really tried pushing the envelope the last two days trying to get ready, but it is in my interest to give it a rest and allow the problem to heal in order to avoid further injury, Els said in a statement issued by the PGA Tour.
Els is coming off a disappointing tie for 66th in last weeks U.S. Open. He has three top-3s this season, but no wins.
Els said he would try to return to action in time to defend his championship at the European Tours Loch Lomond World Invitational July 12-15.
