The third-ranked UCLA men's golf team took the first round lead at the NCAA West Regionals in Sunriver, Ore.
The Bruins posted a 5-under par score of 283 on Thursday and led second-place New Mexico, which posted a 4-under par score of 284. Arizona State, BYU and Toledo are tied for third at 2-under 286.
Senior Travis Johnson led the Bruins with a 6-under par 66 in the first round. Johnson signed for a bogey-free round that featured six birdies, including four on the front nine.
Junior John Poucher fired a 3-under 69. He was 4 under par after nine holes, but carded one bogey on the back nine to tie for fourth place.
Seniors Roy Moon, Steve Conway and John Merrick are each tied for 49th place after posting 2-over par scores of 74 on Thursday. Moon was 5 over on the front nine, but three birdies on the back brought him to 2 over.
