USGA Awards More Than $21 Million in Grants

RSS

The United States Golf Association announced it has awarded a total of $21,089,706 since 1997 as a part of the its 'For the Good of the Game' initiative. The program is a 10-year, $50 million commitment to making golf more accessible and affordable.

In its first assessment for 2001, 58 grants were awarded to programs and projects in 29 states across the nation, totaling more than $1.9 million. In comparison, 26 grants totaling $924,556 were appropriated in early 2000.

Applications for grants continue to grow. In 2000, the USGA Foundation Grants Program awarded 249 grants overall, totaling more than $6.4 million, surpassing any previous year's giving by $2 million.

One of the noteworthy programs recognized in this most recent series of funding was the Boys and Girls Club of the Blackfeet Nation, located in Browning, Mont., which received a $33,000 grant.

The grant will support a year-round junior golf program, in which 98% of the participants are Native American and come from economically disadvantaged homes on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Fifty youths will participate in scheduled practice and instructional sessions on the driving range and practice putting green located at the Boys and Girls Club. They also will have the opportunity to play golf at the nearby East Glacier Golf Course.

This expanding partnership between the USGA and the Native American Sports Council was begun in 1999 to help expand and promote junior golf programs and affordable access in tribal communities. Since the partnership's inception, programs for Native American youth have received $350,000 in USGA grants. The USGA supports 19 USGA Native American programs across the country.

The USGA Foundation Grants Program targets the economically disadvantaged, individuals with disabilities, and minorities. It also is involved in the construction of facilities intended to introduce the game to new audiences.
