Wargo Goes to the Top

The first round has been all or nothing for Tom Wargo in 2000. Friday at the Comfort Classic just happened to be one of those 'all' days. Wargo shot an 8-under-par 64 to tie Gil Morgan for the 18-hole lead at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis, Ind.
Morgan and Wargo are one shot clear of leading 2000 money earner Bruce Fleisher, who shot 65 in his first start in two weeks. Jim Colbert is two shots off the lead at 6-under. Colbert is seeking his first Senior victory since the 1998 Transamerica. Eight players, including Gary McCord, are tied at 5-under-par.
Friday, Wargo carded nine birdies to just one bogey. Wargo's 64 tied his lowest round of the season. The 2000 LiquidGolf.com Invitational champion has opened in 65 or lower on four occasions this year. In contrast, the 57-year-old has also posted a 75 or higher to begin an event eight times in 25 starts.
Playing in his first tournament since the Novell Utah Showdown three weeks ago, Morgan showed no signs of rust. The two-time 2000 victor reeled off eight birdies and nary a bogey in Friday's first round.
An $187,500 first-place check is up for grabs this week. Fleisher is looking to extend his lead on the money list over Larry Nelson. Nelson won back-to-back tournaments to close to within $70,000 of Flash. However, Nelson is not in this week's field.
