Dougherty, who won once on the PGA Tour, shot 66 Saturday, and finished with another 6-under tally Sunday to win his second career Senior PGA Tour event. In the process, he tied the all-time Senior 54-hole scoring record in relation to par. Doughertys 22-under total matched that of Raymond Floyd in the 1993 Gulfstream Aerospace Invitational. Tom Kite also tied the mark later in the 01 season at the Gold Rush Classic.
Thats just a bonus, icing on the cake, really, Dougherty said of tying the all-time record. Im ecstatic, really. I dont show my emotions, but Im really thrilled.
Dougherty returns to Kansas City, Mo., ready to defend his title in the $1.6 million event. He is among the 78 players vying for the $240,000 first-place prize.
One notable absentee is Tom Watson.
Watson, a Kansas City native, will skip the event to attend his daughter, Megs, graduation from Duke University.
The 52-year-old will participate in both the Wednesday and Thursday pro-ams. Under tour rules, players not entered in the field are not allowed to compete in the pro-ams. However, Watson was given an unprecedented waiver.
There was no question what I must do. Four years, paying all that much money, I want to see that, Watson said late last year, when he made the decision. I have to watch her walk right up there and get that diploma. Ive got to be there.
