Western Open to Aid Evans Scholars

The Western Open, being contested this week, will donate its proceeds to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

The foundation has been in existence since 1930, when it was founded to provide college scholarships to deserving golf caddies. The Western Golf Association, the parent body of the tournament, operates the program. It gave $1.9 million to the Evans Scholars in 2002.

Since its inception, the scholarship program has sent more than 8,400 caddies to college on full tuition and housing scholarships. Nearly two-thirds of the scholars maintain a B average or better, and the graduation rate is nearly 90 percent, compared to a 50-percent national average.
