Wie Wins Amateur of Month

BIRMINGHAM, ALA - Hawaiian schoolgirl phenom Michelle Wie has been named National Amateur of the Month for June by the Southern Golf Association following her record-shattering performance to win the USGA Women's Amateur Publinx title.

By winning the event at age 13, Wie became the youngest winner of any USGA championship in which no age limit is imposed. The long-driving high school freshman grader supplanted previous record holder Laura Baugh, who was 16 when she won the 1971 Women's Amateur.

Wie won the Publinx by defeating former NCAA champion Virada Nirapathpongporn in the final match. She is both the first female and first junior to win the new SGA award.

June honorable mentions go to 18-year-old Beck Troutman of McComb, Miss., and Auburn senior Lee Williams. Troutman won the Southern Junior at demanding Old Waverly C.C. in West Point, Miss., completing a two-week June tear in which he was an aggregate 20-under-par for his five tournament rounds in the Bubba Conlee National Amateur and the Southern Junior. Williams, set to defend his Southern Amateur title this month at The Homestead in Virginia, scored back-to-back June wins in the Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta and the Greystone Amateur in Birmingham.
