Wittenberg, 18, became the first winner to draw a unanimous vote from the selection panel of golf officials, college coaches and golf journalists after he won the 97th Southern Amateur at The Homestead in Virginia and the Porter Cup at Niagara Falls, N.Y. In both events, the blossoming Memphis, Tenn., star scored come-from-behind victories with hot final rounds. He shot a final-day 64 to claim the Southern Am victory at the Homestead Cascades course and a 66 to overcome a 6-shot deficit on the final day of the Porter Cup.
In scoring the two triumphs, Wittenberg, an incoming freshman at Oklahoma State, zipped past several older, top-ranked amateurs during the closing holes. He plans to defend his Southern Amateur title next July when the tournament is staged in his home state, at the Honors Course outside Chattanooga
