Woods Honored as Sportsman of the Year


World No. 1 Tiger Woods was honored as the 2001 World Sportsman of the Year for the second straight year at the Laureus World Sports Awards on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Woods, beat out Formula One driver Michael Schumacher, Olympic swimmers Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband, and rower Steve Redgrave.
Australian runner Cathy Freeman, who captured the gold medal in the 400-meter race at the Sydney Olympics, was named the World Sportswoman of the Year.
The Laureus Sports Awards honored athletic achievement worldwide between Feb. 1, 2000 and Jan. 31, 2001.
