Wurtz Leads Veterans in Richmond


Mark Wurtz stumbled late but regrouped to birdie the last and take the outright lead after the first round of the Buy.Com Richmond Open.

Wurtz carded a 6-under-par 65 at the Stonehenge Golf & Country Club in Richmond, Va. He leads Jim McGovern, Tjaart Van der Walt and Bobby Wadkins by one shot.
2001 winners Paul Claxton and Chris Couch are just two back after opening in 4-under-par 67. PGA Tour mainstay Chip Beck is three off the pace following a 68.
Wurtz, who won the 1997 Shreveport Open, was 7-under-par through 13 holes before bogeying the 14th and 15th holes.
Wadkins and Van der Walt each started on the back nine. Upon making the turn, both men birdied holes 3-5. Wadkins then birdied the par-5 6th, while Van der Walt eagled the hole.
Wadkins is seeking his first career victory in 769 combined PGA Tour and Buy.Com Tour starts. Hell be eligible for the Senior PGA Tour when he turns 50 on July 6.
McGovern and Beck are past PGA Tour winners. McGovern, 36, won the 1993 Shell Houston Open. Beck, 44, won four times, with the last coming in 1992. He was also a member of the 1993 Ryder Cup team.
