ORLANDO, Fla. (March 9, 2010) – Golf Channel announced today the expansion of the Golf Channel Am Tour into one of the country’s top golf destinations - South Carolina.

The newly launched local tours – Upstate and Coastal Carolina – are scheduled to host Golf Channel Am Tour local championships at many of the state’s top golf courses, including Kiawah Island Resort, Grande Dunes Resort in North Myrtle Beach and historic Musgrove Mill in Clinton.  The Upstate Carolina Tour includes the Greenville, Spartanburg and Columbia markets, while the Coastal Carolina Tour includes three of the country’s top golf markets – Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Hilton Head Island.

Hilton Head’s Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort will host the kickoff event for both tours – the Palmetto Dunes Major Championship – March 13-14.  Taking place at the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course and the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes, the event is open to Golf Channel Am Tour members and will serve as an automatic qualifier to the 2010 Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships at TPC Sawgrass (home of THE PLAYERS Championship), Sept. 21-29.  The Palmetto Dunes Major Championship is scheduled to have a full field of 160 participants.

“Over the years, a variety of Golf Channel shows have documented the great golf South Carolina has to offer, so we’re very excited to expand the Golf Channel Am Tour into the state and bring that great golf to our new South Carolina members, and other members around the country,” said Gene Pizzolato, chief operating officer, Golf Channel New Media Ventures.

As the largest amateur golf tour in North America, the Golf Channel Am Tour is open to the public and provides the most professional tournament experience for players of all ages and abilities, as well as offering unparalleled access to some of the most renowned and challenging golf courses across the country.

Each year, thousands of amateur golfers compete at a wide range of elite courses through the Golf Channel Am Tour, including PGA West, TPC Sawgrass, PGA National, Barton Creek, Innisbrook, Kingsmill and The Greenbrier to name a few.  Currently, the Tour conducts more than 800 local championships nationwide, culminating annually with the National Championships. The 2010 National Championships is a 72-hole stroke-play competition that determines the National Champion in each of six flights in senior and open divisions.
