PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A dozen competitors hit shots on TPC Sawgrass’ famous 17th hole that found watery graves on Thursday – and a few hit more than one.
Of the 144 players in the field, 124 hit the green in regulation. Of the 12 who found the surrounding water, Colt Knost, William McGirt and Erik Compton each hit a second ball in there, as well.
The scoring average for Round 1 was 3.076.
The shot of the day on 17 came from tournament leader Roberto Castro, who knocked his tee shot to 19 inches away for a tap-in birdie as part of his 9-under-63 round. All told, there were 22 total birdies.
Not everyone who found the green made birdie or par, though. Five players three-putted the green and there were six double bogeys.
