A monster of a hole

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Wednesday’s gale turned the wind, and rain, into the players’ faces on the Old Course’s 17th hole, making the new tee box that has stretched the hole to 495 yards obsolete, at least in the players’ minds.

“I didn’t even go back there today onto the back tee because there was no way we would be put back there. I don’t think, on a day like today,” said Justin Rose, who played the back nine before calling it a day.

Vijay Singh seemed to echo most players’ thoughts on the new tee box on Tuesday when he eyed Royal & Ancient chief Peter Dawson off the 18th fairway and smiled, “You’ve created a monster at 17.”
