Ailing Stricker commits but status still uncertain for The Players

Steve Stricker committed Friday to The Players Championship, but his swing coach said the world’s No. 3 ranked player still appears “doubtful” for next week’s event at the TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course.

Stricker, 43, withdrew after the pro-am at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last week with inflammation of the joint where the clavicle and sternum attach near Stricker’s right shoulder.

Dennis Tiziani, Stricker’s swing coach and father-in-law, said barring a significant improvement over the weekend, he would advise Stricker not to play next week. The decision, of course, is Stricker's, whose career has been remarkably injury free.

“His arm isn’t responding as well as it should,” Tiziani said. “He wants to play, and he committed in case things improve.”

Tiziani said Stricker hit balls Friday morning, but he still felt discomfort.
