Alcott still loves her desert playground

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Amy Alcott walked through the media room at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and stopped to watch TV images of Yani Tseng making the traditional leap into “Poppie’s Pond” after winning last year.

“You know, I started that tradition,” Alcott said.

Indeed, she did. The Kraft Nabisco Championship is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week. The event’s steeped in tradition, including the victor’s leap, one of sport’s coolest victory celebrations. Alcott took the first leap in 1988 after a two-shot victory over Colleen Walker. When Alcott won in 1991, Dinah Shore, whom the event was named after back then, leaped into the pond with Alcott.

“I felt like this was my playground,” said Alcott, a three-time winner of the event.

Alcott is hosting a celebration with past Kraft champions Saturday in the inaugural fresh&easy Dinah Shore Celebrity Pro-Am on the Mission Hills’ Palmer Course. It’s designed to honor Shore and raise money for charity. Kathy Whitworth, Pat Bradley, Patty Sheehan, Nancy Lopez and Alcott are among the Hall of Famers playing.
