Two golfers from Florida will face each other on Saturday in the final of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah.
T.J. Vogel of Miami and Kevin Aylwin of New Smyrna Beach each won two matches to advance to Saturday's 36-hole final.
Vogel, a second-team All America selection from the University of Florida, defeated Alberto Sanchez, 1 up, in the quarterfinals, then stopped Derek Ernst, 4 and 3, in the semis. Ernst, a two-time Mountain West player of the year at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, was trying to reach the APL final for the second year in a row.
Aylwin defeated Paul McConnell, 3 and 2, in the quarterfinals, then ousted Kyle Beversdorf, 2 and 1, in the semifinals.
As finalists, Vogel and Aylwin earn exemptions into next month’s U.S. Amateur and are exempt from local qualifying for next year’s U.S. Open. The champion, if he remains an amateur, typically receives an invitation to the following year’s Masters.
