PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Beware the ailing golfer.
That goes triple for Robert Allenby after he started the U.S. Open with a 3-over-par 74.
Saddled with the flu at the Memorial two weeks ago, then forced to withdraw from the St. Jude Classic with tonsillitis last Thursday, Allenby arrived for this week’s U.S. Open unsure if he could make a full swing because of injury.
On Sunday, Allenby hurt his left wrist while boating with his children in Jupiter.
“It’s still very, very painful,” Allenby said. “I bruised the bone. It is what it is. I'm just dealing with it.”
Allenby said he’s limited to putting to get ready for the second round.
“I can’t even chip,” he said.
Allenby's 74 looked good considering the injury and the fact that he hasn't played Pebble Beach in 11 years.
