Americans grab big Solheim points at Sebonack

RSS

Nobody new cracked into U.S. Solheim Cup qualifying at the U.S. Women’s Open last week, but captain Meg Mallon liked what she saw from the overall play of the Americans at Sebonack Golf Club.

“Nine of the top 10 Americans on the Solheim Cup points list finish in the top 20 this week,” Mallon tweeted Sunday evening. “Way to play in your national championship!”

While a player from the United States may not have won the championship, Americans won a bunch of Solheim Cup points with double points available last week.

Five Americans finished among the top 10 with Paula Creamer (T-4), Angela Stanford (T-4), Brittany Lang (T-7), Jessica Korda (T-7) and Brittany Lincicome (T-9) all showing good form. Overall, nine Americans earned Solheim Cup points with top-20 finishes as Lexi Thompson (T-13), Lizette Salas (T-20), Cristie Kerr (T-20) and Morgan Pressel (T-20) also earned points.

Those finishes should have gained the attention of the Europeans with England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff the only Euro finishing among the top 10. Sweden's Anna Nordqvist finished T-11, Scotland's Catriona Matthew T-15 and France's Karine Icher T-20.

Among the most notable moves, Creamer jumped one spot to go ahead of Kerr at second in points with Korda moving one spot ahead of Thompson into sixth.

Pressure really ratchets up now in the qualifying race with just three events remaining before the team is named at the conclusion of the Ricoh Women’s British Open, where double points will once again be up for grabs. The LPGA is off this week with the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic in Ontario, Canada, next week and the Marathon Classic outside Toledo July 18-21. The Women's British Open is Aug. 1-4.

If the teams were named today, Jessica Korda, Lexi Thompson and Lizette Salas would all make their first U.S. Solheim Cup team.

Here’s how the U.S. race shapes up:
