An amusing evil presence lurks

OAKMONT, Pa. – Oakmont golf course superintendent John Zimmers says he is used to being stopped by players wanting to let him know what they think of how he’s grooming the famed course.

In fact, club members have pet names for him.

“They call me Darth Vader or Satan,” Zimmers cracked good-naturedly on the eve of the U.S. Women’s Open.

Mike Davis, the U.S. Golf Association’s senior director of rules and competition, calls Zimmers something else.

“John’s as good as anyone in the business,” Davis said. “One of the reasons we have such great championships here is because of not only the design of the golf course, but John gets it right in terms of how it plays.'
