Augusta showing its teeth

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Friday’s pin sheet suggests there will not be a repeat of Thursday’s birdie-fest.

“Almost all the pins were back yesterday,” said Jamie Mulligan, the swing coach for John Merrick who is attending his 21st Masters. “We drew a line on the pin sheet (in the middle of the green) and decided not to hit past there.”

Friday, however, is a different animal. The most glaring example of this is on the par-5 15th hole, which is cut deep and to the extreme left. Similarly, the 12th hole seems to be the only tee that is forward today, compared to Thursday when all but a handful of holes were playing shorter than advertised.

Just nine players are under par for the day as the morning wave takes the course and there are starting to be some meltdowns. Sandy Lyle, who signed for an opening 69, is 13 over through 12 holes.
