HUMBLE, Texas – Stewart Cink hasn’t played his best golf as of late and the Ryder Cup isn’t until next year. But with him tied for the Shell Houston Open lead and Tom Watson – whom he defeated at the 2009 Open Championship – now serving as the United States captain, it’s worth asking the following question:
Can he appreciate the storyline should he make a run at playing on Watson’s team?
“I definitely don't need to be picked, I guess,” he said with a laugh before adding, “I'm just kidding.”
Once he got serious, Cink talked about what such an opportunity would mean to him.
“I'd love to play for Tom,” he said. “He's great. He handled that British Open really well, and I think he probably thinks I handled it well. We handled it like golfers would handle things.”
