The baby watch

TURNBERRY, Scotland – Ross Fisher has a big week planned. Play the Open Championship, avoid all of Turnberry’s many hazards and stay close to his cell phone at all times.

Fisher and his wife are expecting the couple’s first child on Tuesday, but it doesn’t appear the newborn is in any hurry.

“We tried having a spicy dinner last night and that didn’t work,” Fisher smiled. “Then we took the dog for a long walk and that didn’t work, so we’ll see.”

Fisher lives in Chigwell, which is in the south of England and plans to fly home as soon as his wife goes into labor, a trip that he figures will take 1½ to 2 hours via a private jet out of nearby Prestwick airport.

“It all depends on when (the baby) comes,” said Fisher, who finished fifth at last month’s U.S. Open. “In an ideal world, at least for me, it would be best to come on Sunday or Monday.”
