PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – On Wednesday U.S. Golf Association president Jim Hyler joked when asked about the possibility of back-to-back West Coast U.S. Opens, “We like the West Coast. Don’t hear any rain, do you?”
Hyler was referring to last year’s championship, a muddy mess at Bethpage Black that featured four suspensions of play because of poor weather and a Monday finish.
As Thursday’s opening round at Pebble Beach began under gloomy skies, however, the Long Island gem may get the last laugh. According to weather.com, the forecast at Bethpage calls for no rain, little wind and warm temperatures.
In other words, perfect golf weather.
