CHASKA, Minn. – Ryan Benzel, the Seattle-area club pro playing this week’s PGA Championship, wasn’t the only player at Hazeltine National to struggle on the windswept putting surfaces, but he may have been the most entertaining.
With a wide smile on his face, Benzel walked his way through his five-putt triple bogey at the 17th on Friday.
“Five-putt,” he sighed. “The thing is, I tried on every putt.”
After his first three attempts rushed past the hole, Benzel was just happy to get his fourth putt inside his playing partners Darren Clarke and Charles Howell III.
“After I hit that third one I said to Darren, ‘Oh God, I’m still out aren’t I?'” Benzel said.
