Better late than never: Spieth undergoes new member orientation

RSS

KAPALUA, HawaiiJordan Spieth’s meteoric rise from having no status at the beginning of last year to becoming a PGA Tour winner, Tour Championship competitor and Presidents Cup team member is already the stuff of legend, but he still had to dot some i’s and cross some t’s before competing in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions this week.

Because of his whirlwind progression onto the Tour last year, Spieth never underwent mandatory new member orientation.

Until now.

In what can be described as putting the cart before the horse, the 20-year-old went through orientation this week after playing 23 tournaments a year ago.

“There definitely was still some things that I had questions about regarding FedEx Cup, regarding whatever ‑‑ all kinds of stuff,” he said Thursday. “There's still quite a bit of that I don't understand that I'm not worried about right now, like the pension program and all that.

“It was, I think, more of a brief meeting than it normally is for new members, but I'm excited that I'm not a rookie anymore.”

Spieth said he hopes to compete in 26 or 27 events this year. He’s already eligible for each of the four major championships.
