SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Ernie Els calmy rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on the par-5 11th hole Thursday at the PGA Championship. The feat earned meager applause from a gallery of a couple dozen.
That putt sent Els into a share of the lead, a place he'd remain three holes later when play was halted for the evening. Els stands at 4 under and is tied with Matt Kuchar (who has also played only 14 holes), Nick Watney (who has played 11 holes), Bubba Watson and Francesco Molinari, both of whom have finished their respective rounds.
While the Big Easy was doing his thing, the Big Cheesy was two groups behind at even par. Wisconsin's native son Steve Stricker was plodding along making pars but had quadruple the gallery to that of Els'. Stricker made birdie on No. 13 when the horn blew to get into a group of players at 1 under.
