Big names getting smoked at Sherwood

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Here’s the thing about an 18-man field that doesn’t include anybody outside the top 30 in the world: There are going to be some elite players on the bottom of the leaderboard.

It isn’t often that the names Jordan Spieth, Steve Stricker, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Hunter Mahan and Dustin Johnson are lingering so far off the lead, but each of those six players finds himself at 5 over or worse – and at least 16 shots off the lead – entering the weekend at the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge.

Just days after winning the Australian Open, McIlroy opened with scores of 73-77 at Sherwood Country Club.

Meanwhile, Johnson and Mahan will play in the first group off the tee on Saturday morning after posting scores of 79 and 80, respectively, in the second round.
