ARDMORE, Pa. – Rickie Fowler won to claim the first point for the Americans in afternoon singles at the Walker Cup at Merion Golf Club.
Moments later, teammate Cameron Tringale won his match to clinch retention of the cup.
Moments after that, Peter Uihlein won to clinch the outright American victory in the 42nd staging of these matches.
Bing, bang, boom . . . it’s over.
Great Britain & Ireland was so far behind entering Sunday singles that the team needed to win 8 ½ points in the 10 matches to win the cup. GB&I's Gavin Dear tried to ignite the miracle in the leadoff match, giving Brian Harman his first loss in two Walker Cup appearances, but the Americans responded quickly.
They clinched early with Fowler defeating Matt Haines 2 and 1, Tringale defeating Luke Goddard 8 and 6 and Uihlein prevailing against Stiggy Hodgson 3 and 1.
