Blixt wins second title in Sunday sprint at Greenbrier

RSS

In a race to darkness, Jonas Blixt pulled ahead late on the back nine to win The Greenbrier Classic by two shots on Sunday. Here is the skinny on the final round at Old White TPC:

The leaderboard: Blixt (-13), Steven Bowditch, Johnson Wagner, Matt Jones and Jimmy Walker (-11)

What it means: It’s the second victory in the past 10 months for Blixt, who won last year’s Frys.com Open. This time, however, he earned a berth to the Masters, something he didn’t achieve last year when his win came in the Fall Series. He didn’t have a single top 10 entering this week.

Round of the day: Blixt made four birdies in the first 12 holes Sunday to move to the top of the leaderboard, and his birdie putt on the 16th gave him a two-shot lead. His two-par putt on the final green capped a closing 67.

Best of the rest: Bowditch and Jones each shot 68 to earn a big paycheck, which is increasingly important this time of year, with only six events remaining to qualify for the season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs. Ted Potter Jr. closed with 67 to post all four rounds in the 60s in his first-ever title defense, and Davis Love III’s final-round 67 gave him his first top 10 this season.

Biggest disappointment: Still staked to a two-shot lead at the turn, Wagner unraveled on the back nine when his swing deserted him, carding three bogeys on the inward nine to drop off the pace. Honorable mention goes to Jordan Spieth, who didn’t record a birdie in a final-round 73 that dropped him to T-23.

Shot of the day: Blixt buried a 9-foot birdie putt on 16, a two-shot swing that gave him a comfortable cushion as he played the final two holes.

Quote of the day: “Just so many dreams came true. This is one week, and the whole year kind of turns around.” – Blixt
