Bombs of the Week: Northern Trust Open

Each week, GolfChannel.com will take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest tee shots on the PGA Tour. Here are the four most important distance-related stats from the Northern Trust Open, won in a playoff by John Merrick:

Longest drive: Bill Haas, 366 yards 

It’s not surprise to see Haas on this list, for he was staked to a three-shot lead after 54 holes and in position to become only the fifth player to win back-to-back at Riviera. Instead, Haas made six bogeys Sunday en route to a final-round 73 and T-3 finish. At Riviera, Haas’ big poke of 366 yards was tops for the week, but it still paled to Kyle Stanley’s 428-yard moon shot on the hilly Plantation Course at Kapalua.

Last four leaders: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am: Sean O’Hair, 355 yards; Waste Management Phoenix Open: Gary Woodland, 379; Farmers Insurance Open: Scott Gardiner, 367; Humana Challenge: Patrick Reed, 357.

Carry distance: Angel Cabrera, 298 yards

El Pato finished T-33 at Riviera, but at least he owned the biggest carry of the week. In the warmer conditions, Cabrera’s farthest-flying drive compared well with other blasts at various Tour stops this season, though Dustin Johnson’s 312.9 yards at the Farmers Insurance Open is still the best of the year.

Last four leaders: Pebble Beach: Robert Garrigus, 292.4 yards; Phoenix: Jason Day, 311.3; Farmers: Dustin Johnson, 312.9; Humana: Robert Garrigus, 299.8. 

Highest clubhead speed: Charlie Beljan, 128.41 yards

Few players in the game can pound the ball as far as Beljan, and that was evident at the Northern Trust Open. The Disney winner got himself into a playoff at Riviera, only to falter on the second playoff hole. Still, his clocked clubhead speed of 128.41 was easily the best of the year on Tour, surpassing Dustin Johnson’s 124.61 mph swing in the season opener at Kapalua.

Last four leaders: Pebble Beach: Jason Day, 121.45 mph; Phoenix: Bubba Watson, 122.48; Farmers: Gary Woodland, 123.61; Humana: Luke List, 123.7.

Highest ball speed: Charlie Beljan, 182.58 mph

Not surprisingly, Beljan also checked in with the highest ball speed, which was the second-best total of the year; Dustin Johnson’s 184.38 en route to his victory at Kapalua is still the best.

Last four leaders: Pebble Beach: Robert Garrigus, 178.51 mph; Phoenix: Bubba Watson, 181.89 mph; Farmers: Luke List, 181.69; Humana: List, 181.15.
