DUBLIN, Ohio – Phil Mickelson opened with a 5-under 67, the byproduct of a birdie-birdie-birdie run midway through his closing nine and he is currently tied for second place at the rain-delayed Memorial.
Mickelson’s 67 was his best opening round at Muirfield Village in nine starts, the likely product, he admits, of having extra time to work with swing coach Butch Harmon and Dave Stockton Sr. last weekend after missing the cut at Colonial.
“It wasn’t as far off as it actually looked (at Colonial),” Mickelson said.
The Memorial is one of the few titles that have eluded Mickelson in his career. His best Tour finish was a tie for fourth in 2006. His best showing at Muirfield Village came during the 1986 U.S. Junior
“I lost in the quarters in 19 holes,” he smiled.
