Bring your hard hat to Olympic Club this week

SAN FRANCISCO – Players would be better suited in hard hats instead of golf hats and visors at this U.S. Open, according to Graeme McDowell, the 2010 champion.

Youve got to play very workman-like golf at times, said McDowell, who got into early contentionwith a 69. Tiger played it very, I think, workman-like would be the way I would describe his round. He just did what this golf course asks you to do, and it asks you to place it in the fairway. If the pins in the front, it tells you to hit it in the middle of the green. You cant really go firing at too many pins.

McDowell said he watched Woods play on TV before he went off in his afternoon round. Woods hit 10 fairways, so did McDowell. Francesco Molinari (12) is the only player who hit more fairways in the first round.

The first-round scoring average was nearly 5 over par (74.9) in the first round.
