There is more at stake this week in Australia than just the final leg of the Scotty Slam.
The Australian Open, which begins Thursday at Royal Sydney, is also the first qualifying site for next year’s British Open at Royal Liverpool. There are three qualifying places available, which will go to the leading three players (not otherwise exempt) who finish inside the top 10 and ties.
This is part of the new Open Qualifying Series that will comprise 14 events in nine countries and span more than eight months.
Other qualifying events include the Feb. 6-9 Joburg Open, June 19-22 Irish Open and July 10-13 Scottish Open. On the PGA Tour, four spots will be reserved for the leading four finishers at both the AT&T National (June 26-29) and Greenbrier Classic (July 3-6), and one berth is available at the John Deere Classic.
