Jonathan Byrd’s playoff ace was still echoing through the Las Vegas gloom but the four-time PGA Tour winner had a tough decision to make.
Byrd’s victory earned him a spot in next week’s WGC-HSBC Champions event in China, a limited-field, big-money tournament held the week before the season finale at Walt Disney World Resort.
According to Byrd’s management firm, Crown Sports, he will pass on the invitation because it would have been difficult to get from Shanghai to central Florida in time for the finale.
Still at stake for Byrd, who moved to 52nd on the money list, is a chance to finish among the top 30 earners for 2010 and earn an invitation to the Masters. Although the HSBC event does not have a cut and a $7 million purse, earnings from the event are not considered official. Which means the $4.7 million Children’s Miracle Network Classic will be his last chance, and only, chance to crack the top 30.
