Amateur Laura Gonzalez-Escallon surged ahead Wednesday at the first stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament, shooting a 5-under 67 at Mission Hills to take a five-shot lead.
Yueer Cindy Feng and Erica Popson are tied for second at 4-under 140.
First-round co-leader Cheyenne Woods carded a 1-over 73 in the second round to drop into a tie for fourth, but she appears to be well on her way to advancing to the second stage. The top 100 players at the end of the four-round qualifier move on to the second stage, which will be held Oct. 8-11 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
No cut was made after the second round here. All players who complete 72 holes receive Symetra Tour status for the 2014 season.
