Cabrera recovering from surgery

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Angel Cabrera is back at home in Houston recovering from surgery on Wednesday to repair a small tear and infection in his lower digestive system.

Cabrera arrived in Charlotte for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship on Monday “not feeling very good,” his swing coach Charlie Epps said and managed to play just nine holes on Tuesday before the pain became unbearable.

The two-time major champion went to the tournament’s first aid tent and was advised to go to a local emergency room where he had a CAT scan which doctors said revealed no issues.

On Wednesday, however, the pain worsened. Doctors at Carolina Medical Center-Pineville reviewed the CAT scan and discovered the tear. The Argentine stayed in his hotel to recover and flew home on Friday to Houston, where he met with his doctors Saturday morning.

“The doctor this morning was very encouraged,” Epps said.

Epps said Cabrera still plans to travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for next week’s Players Championship on Tuesday.

Cabrera has struggled the last two years with a series of dental implants. In fact he’s scheduled to undergo two more implants the week of the Byron Nelson Championship and the week before the U.S. Open.

“When it rains it pours,” Epps said.
