Longtime PGA Tour caddie Greg Rita and his family were robbed in their Jacksonville, Fla., home on New Year’s Eve, according to firstcoastnews.com.
According to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, three men broke into Rita’s home through an open garage door and his wife, Kelley, awoke to three people standing at the foot of her bed. One of the suspects was armed and hit Kelley in the head with the gun.
The suspects took Kelley Rita to the living room and left Greg, who is battling brain cancer, in their bedroom, according to firstcoastnews.com and the couple’s 4-year-old son was in another room and remained asleep. The suspects spent an hour rummaging through the home and took thousands of dollars of jewelry and electronics.
Police later arrested Jay Sowers, 17, Joshua Martin, 19, and Bernard Johnson, 20, for the crime. Authorities have not released their mug shots or other information because there may be other victims from the spree that evening.
Rita has worked for some of the game’s best during his career, including Scott Hoch, Gil Morgan, Curtis Strange, John Daly, Mark O’Meara and David Duval.
