In what PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem called the “worst kept secret,” the circuit announced on Monday that Cadillac has signed a six-year deal to title sponsor the year’s second World Golf Championship at Doral starting in 2011.
The WGC-Cadillac Championship will be played March 10-13. As for the rest of the 2011 Tour lineup the golf world will have to wait until Thursday to see the finished product Finchem said.
Among the remaining holes on the 2011 docket is a possible return to Detroit, a move Finchem confirmed the Tour is studying.
“We are in preliminary discussions to bring PGA Tour golf back to Michigan and the Detroit area,” Finchem said. “When we exited Michigan a few years ago we said we’d love to go back.”
The Buick Open had been played in Detroit since 1958 before GM declared bankruptcy in 2009. When asked if a version of the Buick could return in time for the 2012 season Finchem warned, “we have a ways to go.”
“We have a full schedule right now,” he said.
