TURNBERRY, Scotland – Mark Calcavecchia wasn't sure he'd even play the British Open this year. The 1989 Open champion has always considered this his favorite tournament, but an achy back and a 36-hole Sunday at the John Deere nearly had him withdraw.
Now the 49-year-old veteran has shot a first-round 67 and was the leader in the clubhouse for a moment before John Senden came in with a 66.
Does Calcavecchia think he can win?
'I could,' he said. 'It's highly unlikely. I'll let you know in three days.'
