Watson, Simpson off to hot start on cool day

MELBOURNE, Australia – Following Friday’s wind-whipped session players at the Presidents Cup welcomed cool, cloudy skies and little wind early Saturday at Royal Melbourne.

“A lot of the pins are very accessible,” International captain Greg Norman said. “I’ve always felt this was the best time to get at this golf course in a northeast wind.”

The difference between the rounds was already evident early in the foursome session. Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson, undefeated as a team in the American leadoff spot, birdied the first hole to take a 1-up lead over Robert Allenby and Geoff Ogilvy. In Friday’s better-ball format the two combined for just six birdies all day.
