Cantlay finishes as low amateur

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Three amateurs made the cut this week at the Masters and UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay took home low-amateur honors with an eventful final round.

Cantlay, along with U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft and Asian Amateur champion Hideki Matsuyama all played the weekend and the battle for low amateur heading into Sunday seemed over with Matsuyama leading Cantlay by six shots.

But Matsuyama struggled and shot 80, including bogeys on two of the final three holes. Cantlay took advantage of that hiccup and shot even-par 72 with two eagles, five birdies, three bogeys a double bogey and a quadruple bogey.

“I learned a lot about the golf course and angles to play and places to hit it and not to hit it,” CantIay said. “Think that's really going to benefit me when I come back in the future.”

Cantlay ended at 7 over. Matsuyama was 9 over and Kraft was 18 over.
