Cat out of the bag: Couples a Ryder Cup assistant?

DUBLIN, Ohio – Fred Couples has been the victorious captain in the last two Presidents Cup matches. The '92 Masters champion will bring some of that leadership experience to the 2012 Ryder Cup team.

In a press conference to officially announce Couples as captain of the American team for the 2013 Presidents Cup, he let it slip he will be an assistant to Davis Love III at Medinah this coming September.

'I'm going to help Davis, I think,' Couples said. 'I don't know if that's out there yet, but I believe he's pretty much put that out there.'

No, it wasn’t out there yet, at least not according to Julius Mason, the PGA of America’s senior director of communications and media relations.

'Davis hasn't made a decision on who is going to be his assistants yet,' Mason told Tuesday.

In February, Couples indicated he wants to succeed Love as the Ryder Cup captain in 2014.

“Maybe in the next two or four years, I’ll get a shot at it,' Couples said at the Dubai Desert Classic. 'But they are going to name another Presidents Cup captain in another month, and I know they’re all pushing for me to do it again, so I’m all for that. But obviously I would love to be a Ryder Cup captain, there’s no doubt.”

Jack Nicklaus, host of this week's Memorial Tournament, has led the United States in four of the nine Presidents Cup matches played. He was also Ryder Cup captain in 1983 at PGA National and at this venue in 1987.

While Couples would like to be the Ryder Cup captain someday, he expressed excitement about the opportunity to continue in the same capacity in the Presidents Cup.

'I love the Ryder Cup,' he said. 'But to be (Presidents Cup) captain for a third time is very exciting.'
